ELLIOT HANSON selected for 2020 Olympics 'dress rehearsal'

Published 1:00am on 21 Jun 2019

Redesmere sailor Elliot Hanson has been selected as GBR's Men's Laser sailor for the 2020 Olympics 'Dress Rehersal' event in Tokyo. To highlight the importance of selection for the final test event... of the ten UK crews who were selected for the Rio 2016 final test event, eight went on to the actual Games where they won 2 gold and a silver.

Whilst the RYA Olympic Selection Committee list for the Olympics Test event does not hold any major surprises for regular followers of the Olympic classes World Cup and major class championships, Elliot gets the Laser spot in what has been a close battle by the young guns in the British Sailing Team to replace Olympian Nick Thompson for Tokyo 2020. Elliot is a longstanding member of Redesmere SC, having raced and trained with us since his early years, and was the first sailor to win the Topper triple crown. His first major sailing title was taking Gold in the Laser class at Medemblik in 2017, the same year he added the Red Bull Youth America's Cup title to the string of International and World trophies he continues to win since progressing through the Redesmere's training and development programme. Whilst 2018 was marred by injury and a subsequent recovery to win the 2018 World Cup Series in Enoshima, he is now clearly back with a vengeance!

Despite his rigorous and intensive world-wide training and racing programme, Elliot still finds time, occasionally, to mentor at Redesmere and is an ongoing inspiration to all our young sailors. In 2017, he also joined us for our Diamond Jubilee celebrations attended by HRH The Princess Royal, President of the RYA.

Congratulations Elliot - Go, Go, Go!
