Youth Sailors go from Strength to Strength Across Europe

With the Summer National, European and World sailing championships season in full swing, Redesmere's youth sailors have been active across the Solo, Laser Radial and Topper fleets in particular.

In the Topper Class, Isabel Wallwork and Marcus Howard have been successful in both the National Series and the Topper World Championship (Le cerclenautique de Loctudy, France). Building on her 3rd place in the Topper Natioanl Series, Isabel went onto to achieve an excellent 7th in the World Championship Gold Fleet, whilst Marcus Howard achieved a excellent 3rd (Silver Fleet) at his first World Championship, building on his 23rd (of 237) in the National Series.

The Laser Youth Europeans took place in Gdynia, Poland this year, where Anya Haji-Michael finished 25th before going on to secure 43rd in the Laser U21 World Championship (Nieuwpoort, Belgium). At his inaugaral European Championships, Tom Brindley also secured a highly commendable 10th in the Radial Bronze Fleet

Outside the traditional youth classes, Oliver Davenport continued to build on his success in the National Solo Class, securing winning the Junior category and securing 4th overall in the National Championships held in Torquay. Oli is now building up for the Fireball National and Euopean championships to be held in August (Lyme Regis).

Our other youth sailors continue to be active across the regional circuits and RYA Zone Squads as they look to follow in the footsteps of their peers and mentors at the Club, not least Elliot Hanson (recent winner of the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup and part of the British Sailing squad).

If you would like to follow these sailors and take your own first steps into youth racing, an ideal first opportunity is the imminent NW Junior Travellers Open Meeting being held at Redesmere on Saturday 2nd September. With Optimist, Handicap and Youth classes racing there is an opportunity for all sailors under the age of 19 to participate in this relaxed introduction to regional open racing.
