Redesmere Sailors go from Strength to Strength around UK and the World

Published 1:00am on 11 Jul 2018

With the Summer National, European and World sailing championships season in full swing, Redesmere's sailors have been active across the Solo, Laser (Standard & Radial) and Topper fleets, in particular.

In the Laser Radial and Topper classes, Tom Bradley and Marcus Howard are continuing their campaigns in the RYA North West Junior Traveller Series, with Tom and Marcus taking both 1st and 2nd Youth in the recent Bassenthwaite round (2nd & 4th Overall, respectively).

Further afield, at the amazing Riva del Garda in northern Italy, Oli Davenport came 2nd Overall in the Solo Nations Cup, whilst Elliot Hanson continued his post-injury return to the Laser Standard with a 2nd at the Kiel Olympic event and Anya Haji-Michael competed in the Women's Radial.

Back in the UK, Oli Davenport also came 4th in the Solo Nationals held over the last week of July at Hayling Island

On our own lake, the Club's Sunday morning 'RYA Start Racing' course has introduced a fresh tranche of social and developing sailors (of all ages) to the different aspects of sailing that racing can bring and already these are taking part in the Club's regular Wednesday and Sunday racing programme. Later in the Summer, no doubt they will build on this experience by competing in the Club's annual Youth and Novice Championship racing series and, maybe, follow in the footsteps of their peers and mentors at the Club, not least Elliot Hanson (winner of the Red Bull Youth Americas Cup and part of the British Sailing squad).

If you would like to follow these sailors and take your own first steps into regional youth racing, an ideal first opportunity is the imminent NW Junior Travellers Open Meeting being held at Redesmere on Saturday 2nd September. With Optimist, Handicap and Youth classes racing there is an opportunity for all sailors under the age of 19 to participate in this relaxed introduction to regional open racing. For further information, please check out the Club calendar or contact Phil Haji-Michael.
