Sunday Radio Control Sailing 2022

Published 8:15pm on 12 Jan 2022

Eleven DragonForce 65s were out racing on Sunday morning 9 January 2022. A record number for the Redesmere RC fleet. Three sailors were trying out RC in borrowed boats, all of whom acquitted themselves remarkably well given their levels of experience sailing these boats.

Conditions were dry but somewhat chilly with a breeze fluctuating around WSW. These fluctuations led to some fairly tricky conditions at times with changing wind shadows and eddies from the trees (typical Redesmere). As usual for RC sessions, we sailed several short, quickfire races over the morning. Starting was interesting with up to eleven boats trying to start on a relatively short line with the wind fluctuating in strength and direction. A few incidents but generally the fleet got away in reasonable order. Sailing upwind towards a low sun looming through the cloud cover made judging what was happening at the windward mark a bit of a challenging at times. As usual racing was close with some close finishes. Victories for Peter (Baldwin), Dave (Wainwright), Jim (Strudwick) and Wilf (Ford). In between, two boats required rescuing by powerboat as they headed towards the dam, locked in a close embrace!

All in all, a most enjoyable morning, sailing and racing in the company of other sailors standing (or sitting) together on the bank.

There is an open invitation for all club members and their families to come along to our next Sunday morning session on 23 January, 10.30am and maybe have a go. This is in addition to our regular Tuesday morning sessions to which everyone is also welcome.
