Junior Training
Spring Friday Evenings
This course is for junior Club Members up to 18 years of age and runs on six Friday evening sessions during May and June; from 6pm to 8.30pm. Junior’s must be aged 5 or over to be eligible to apply for a place. For those aged 9 and above sessions last 2 ½ hours, for the under 9s sessions last for 1 ¼ hours only and will be a mixture of the earlier and later half. Parents of children under 9 must remain on site for the duration of the training. The course covers the RYA syllabi for Stages 1 to 3, but there is not always sufficient time to complete an RYA level over the 6 weeks. Time on the water and extra practise is encouraged at Social Sailing and should be recorded in log books.
Summer Week
The summer training week is an intensive week of both practical and theory sessions open to juniors aged 9 or above. Club boats are available for use and will be allocated dependent on which RYA course you are following. Those offered are Stages 1 to 4 of the Youth Scheme and the Seamanship Level 3 course from the Adult scheme. The course runs from 9.30am to 4.30om on five week days, so Children are split into groups dependent on age and ability and will be allocated boats suitable to their weight and sailing skills. packed lunches are required. RYA certificates may be awarded if candidates have met the required standards.
Autumn Friday Evenings
This course is for juniors only and runs on five Friday evening during September and October, from 5pm to 7.15pm. Junior’s must be aged 5 or over to be eligible. Children are split into groups dependent on age and ability and will be allocated boats suitable to their weight and sailing skills. Parents of children under 9 must remain on site for the duration of the training. The course covers the RYA syllabi for Stages 1 to 3, but there is not always sufficient time to complete an RYA level over the 5 weeks. Time on the water and extra practise is encouraged at Social Sailing and should be recorded in log books.
Thursday Night ‘Teens Club’
The Thursday night club is an opportunity for teenagers with sufficient sailing skills to improve their sailing at their own pace. Juniors must be aged 13 or above and have a minimum of an RYA Stage 3 certificate to be eligible to apply for a place (younger sailors may at the discretion of the Training Committee). Sailing is done in a mixture of single-handed and double-handed boats. RYA Certificates can be awarded if candidates achieve the required level of sailing. Time on the water and extra practise is encouraged at Social Sailing and should be recorded in log books.
Assistant Instructor Training
An assistant instructor qualification is open to those 14 or over, who hold the Seamanship qualification and are interested in helping put with Club training. It is only valid for the centre where it is taken.
Race Training
The race training is aimed at adults and juniors who want to improve their racing skills. You should be a competent sailor who has the sailing skills equivalent to an RYA Level 2 adult certificate, or RYA stage 3 junior certificate (you need not have taken an RYA course). Adults will race in the club GP14’s, juniors will use their own boat or a club Topper. Training is on five Sunday mornings in April and May and will consist of both theory sessions and practical exercises on the water, plus one evening theory session. The RYA ‘Start Racing’ certificate may be awarded if candidates have met the required standard. Please note that juniors should be aged 12 and above for this course (younger sailors may be accepted at the discretion of the Club.
